Amazon FBA Shipping Rates 2025: Cheaper Fees for Apparel, Bags, and Accessories

Great news for all Amazon FBA sellers in the Apparel, Accessories, Backpacks, and Handbags categories:
From May 15, 2025 Amazon is updating the calculation method for shipping fees in the program “Dispatched by Amazon”. For many retailers, this means: Significantly lower shipping costs and higher margins!

Previous regulation for FBA shipping costs

Until now, when calculating FBA shipping fees, the higher value out unit weight and volumetric weight used. Especially with large, lightweight products — such as backpacks or bulky clothing — this often led to increased shipping fees.

example:

• Unit weight of your backpack: 0.6 kg
• Volume weight: 1.8 kg (due to package size)
• Previous billing: 1.8 kg → high shipping costs.

That will change from May 15, 2025

With the new regulation, Amazon is significantly simplifying shipping fee calculation:

✔️ It will anymore uses the higher weight.

✔️ Instead, only the following will count in the future:

• The fixed package size category (e.g. “small”, “standard”, “large” — based on package dimensions)
• The actual unit weight of your article.

Important: that Volumetric weight doesn't matter anymore!

For many sellers, particularly in the categories of clothing, accessories and backpacks/handbags, this change means clear benefits:

💰 Lower shipping fees, as lightweight but bulky items are rated more favorably.

Other major changes to Amazon FBA for apparel, bags, and accessories

In addition, Amazon will introduce the following new features from May 15, 2025:

• 7 new package size categories especially for the product groups “Apparel and accessories” as well as “Backpacks and handbags”.
• No processing fees for returns more for products with a high return rate.
• Retrospective refund all processing fees for backpacks and handbags incurred following the introduction of the return fee on February 1, 2025. → No action required from your side!
